Cosmetic Rhinoplasty(Nose reshaping)

Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose in order to improve the function or the appearance. Rhinoplasty is also commonly referred as "nose reshaping" or "nose job". Rhinoplasty is the 6th most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States. Even though the nose may seem to be a fairly simple facial structure, it is actually quite complex. The upper part of the nose is made up of a series of small bones, while the midsection of the nose and the tip are cartilage.

What are the different types of Rhinoplasty?

When the doctor makes small incisions at the base of the nose, the procedure is called an open rhinoplasty. When the surgeon performs the surgery from the inside of the nose, it is a closed rhinoplasty. Depending on the changes you want, the type of surgery you undergo will vary. Most people want to change the upper part of the nose, the tip or even both.

Rhinoplasty can change:

  • Nose size, in relation to facial balance
  • Nose width, at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils
  • Nose profile, with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nasal tip, that is enlarged or bulbous, drooping, upturned or hooked
  • Nostrils that are large, wide or upturned

When would an individual consider the Rhinoplasty?

  • When the nose is too large, too small, too wide, Rhinoplasty is done to improve the symmetry and aesthetics of the face.
  • Rhinoplasty can be performed to meet aesthetic goals or for reconstructive purposes to correct trauma, birth defects or breathing problems.
  • Improves the deformities such as those acquired as a result of accidents.
  • Nose reshaping might be considered to give the nose a more masculine or feminine look, according to the standards of proportion recognized for each sex.
  • To correct the Nasal asymmetry

Preparing for rhinoplasty

If you smoke, your doctor will ask you to stop one or two weeks before your procedure. He or she may also ask you to discontinue or even start taking certain medications and supplements.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Under a local or general anesthesia, your surgeon will work through the nostrils, without making an exterior incision, reaching the cartilage and bone located under the skin. Following, the surgeon may rasp or trim the bone and cartilage with special instruments to give the nose the desired shape and size. In rare cases, where a deeper incision is needed, the surgeon may perform a little cut across the columella (the tissue that divides the nostrils) to access the bone. This surgery is complex for surgeons to perform but less painful for patients and it normally takes one or two hours.

Results

You should see a change within 6-8 weeks after the surgery, with continued refinement for 6-12 months.

Risks

To reduce risk of complications, follow the instructions given by your surgeon. Patients who have been able to achieve an adequate understanding with their surgeons have obtained very positive results, and today they are happy and satisfied with the changes.

Recovery

Each person heals differently, but most people need one to two weeks to recover from rhinoplasty and can then safely return to work. After surgery, you may have gauze packing in your nose and a splint for a few days until the nasal bones stabilize. You'll also see bruising around your eyes and cheeks for one to three weeks. Your doctor will let you know when you can return to your regular exercise routine, but it will probably be two to three weeks until you've healed adequately.
